The Shopping List:

The following is a shopping list of activities and resources to help start your Mentoring relationship, get to know each other and facilitate discussions of work/life issues.

1. Identify Strengths and Weaknesses

  • Career leadership test - Obtained through Concordia Career Management Services http://johnmolson.concordia.ca/en/career-services/students
  • Myers Briggs - Obtained through Concordia Counselling and Development http://cdev.concordia.ca/
  • Do What you Are - Book by Paul D. Tieger & Barbara Barron-Tieger
  • Develop a mentorship business plan - Template to come in November
  • Review past experiences/careers
  • Identify appropriate classes/extracurricular activities

2. Identify industry/function to target

  • Provide contacts to do "Informational Interviews"
  • Meet with in-house employees
  • Attend association/networking events
  • Job shadowing opportunities

3. Obtain Employment

  • Work on CV
  • Provide inside view on specific industries, including prioritizing list of potential target employers
  • Prep for 1st/2nd interviews
  • Discuss negotiation of signing contract
